Industrial Automation, Definition and Overview

Nowadays, you might have heard automation word in every sector of Industry, whether it is Space research, IT, Manufacturing, Hospitality, Healthcare, Transportation or service sector. We can’t imagine any of these sectors without Automation. The Automation that we see today has a history since the Stone Age of human beings and it has evolved to the stage that we see it today.

There are many television serials having robots as lead characters. There are more Sci-Fi movies like a robot, terminator, etc. where the robot does all kinds of work that humans could not do. So these are fictional scenarios where all kinds of work are done by the robotic machine itself.

Definition of Industrial automation

So industrial automation can be defined as the use of set technologies and automatic control devices which can results in the automatic operation and control of different industrial processes without significant human intervention and achieving superior quality, performance than manual control. These automation devices include PLCs, PCs, PACs, etc. and technologies include various industrial communication systems.

In reality, we need to program the machine in a sequential manner, to get the required work done. Programing is one aspect of industrial automation, the automatic machine is made up of Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, Hydraulic, and Pneumatic parts.

What is PLC?

Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is the electronic part that is used to do the Programming and using its inputs PLC takes the commands from humans and based on the program it controls the rest of the parts of the machine to achieve the expected output.

As we mentioned above automation is the set of Engineering technologies that include Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, and Mechanical Engineering, that helps in operation, process, and control in different sectors of Industry (e.g. Petrochemical, Pharma, Space, Agriculture, Automotive, etc.) which results in a high-quality product with increased production capacity and the highest level of safety for the stakeholders involved in the process. Automation reduces the cost of the product which indirectly benefits manufacturers as well as customers in such a competitive market.

So to increase production volume, our industrial infrastructure must be automated so that it can get maximum production with very little time and minimum labor work. PLC programming is one part of industrial automation that takes input from different types of Electrical buttons, HMI (Human Machine Interface) and PLC controls different types of Output for e.g. Pneumatic, Hydraulic Actuators, and Motors. SCADA (Supervisory control and data acquisition) is used as Central Monitoring and Control System for different automatic processes in order to make sure that process does not deviate from the expected end result.
